There was a failure in exchange of information between Serbian and Italian side prior to Serbia-Italy football match, stated the Italian FM. This happened because preventive information never arrived or because the exchange of preventive information did not function the way it should have, according to Franco Frattini. "Failure in communication caused Genoa" He told Italian online news outlet Il Fatto Quotidiano that he was unaware of a warning that Serbian police had sent to their Italian colleagues regarding the arrival of an extreme fan group to Genoa. Distrubance outside and inside the stadium on Tuesday night led to the canceling of a Euro qualifiers game between Italy and Serbia. The Italian FM also stressed that EU's Schengen area could be closed in extreme situations but that "nobody could have imagined that it would be necessary to do so over a game, especially since there was no information which could indicate any danger”, Italian news agency ANSA reported. "Serbia sent an official and formal apology but there are those who criticized our police in an inappropriate way even though they prevented the conflict from escalating and causing even worse consequences," Frattini pointed out. “We should know that hooliganism does not originate in Serbia. Countries with a great European tradition such as Great Britain excelled in (producing) gangs that were sowing terror all over Europe. Serbia is not the problem, but Serbian criminals are, whom the country’s government assumed responsibility to arrest,” he explained. Italian Interior minister Roberto Maroni also made a statement today to say that Serbian intelligence services had underestimated the danger regarding the supporters who traveled to Italy, assessing that Italian police bore no responsibility for the events. According to ANSA, the Italian interior minister said that Serbian services had sent a message to the Italian authorities on October 8 saying that about 100 fans, divided in two groups, would come to Genoa. “Had we been informed that gangs of criminals that would set the stadium on fire would come we would have reacted differently,” said Maroni. But Italian Deputy Secretary of State at the Interior Ministry Alfredo Mantovano said today in Rome that Serbia's police sent a fax without mentioning any possible risk and announcing the arrival of 1,300 fans who had purchased tickets for the game. In the end, this number grew to 1,800 fans, said he, advising "cooperation among countries in the future" in order to avoid similar situations. He also commented on statements heard from the mayor of Genoa, who wondered why Serbian fans were allowed to enter Italy at all. Mantovano said that those voicing such criticism should be consistent and ask for annulment of the Schengen agreement. "There are no borders between Serbia and Italy, but there are countries in between that are under obligation to, if acquainted with the risk, perform checks. Since there was no information of that kind, there was no control. It's absurd to accuse Italy for shortcomings in performing control," Mantovano believes. Rioting Serbian fan (FoNet)
