Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said that Serbia is ready to reach a compromise over the Kosovo question. He added that everyone is aware that the problem in Kosovo can only be solved by way of an agreement. IM: Serbia ready for compromise Kosovo's ethnic Albanians unilaterally declared independence in early 2008, which Serbia rejected as an illegal attempt at secession. Now Dacic says that "Serbia is in a situation where it is being forced to accept a solution that does not include any kinds of agreement, and that is why a solution of compromise must be found". Speaking at a police ceremony in the town of Sremska Kamenica, he reiterated that Serbia does not wish to cause problems in the region, and that Belgrade wants to be part of the solution, adding that all solutions must be peaceful, while "dialogue must continue in order to lead to a compromise that will be in the best interest of all people who live in Kosovo". “The talks going on over the last days should be looked at in this context. Serbia is the only one that has its borders, and that means that it cannot accept Kosovo's independence because that would be the final act that would give complete legitimacy to the unilateral secession of Kosovo,” Dacic said. He said that essential dialogue is needed regarding on what the desired goal and the final solution is, not only for Kosovo but for the entire region, “because Serbia is moving from one pressure to another”. The minister added that he would "repeat all this" as he meets with British Foreign Secretary William Hague in Belgrade today. “Everyone needs to understand that the question of Kosovo is very difficult for Serbia because it is a foundation stone that Serbia was built on, and if the foundation stone is pulled from under us, everything will become unstable,” the interior minister concluded.
