Germany wants Serbia in the European Union, the spokesman of the German Liberals and an expert on Southeastern Europe, Rainer Stinner stated He added that his party also believes that a debate on Kosovo before the United Nations General Assembly is unnecessary. "Germany wants Serbia in EU" Stinner said that official Berlin has recognized Kosovo and that is why he does not see that there are any outstanding issues that need to be discussed and solved in the UN. “Germany, however, supports the efforts to provide peaceful coexistence and constructive cooperation between Kosovo and Serbia,” Stinner told the Tanjug new agency, when asked about Germany's stance on the draft resolution Serbia had submitted to the U.N. after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) presented its opinion on the legality of the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo. Speaking about Serbia's European future, Stinner said that there are no relevant forces in Germany that are against Serbia's accession into the Union, but that the necessary criteria need to be met. “Without meeting the political criteria, progress will be difficult. We want Serbia to get accepted into the EU, because we expect this to bring an essential stabilization of the region. There will be no softening of the criteria,” said Stinner. “Serbia has to meet the political and economic criteria. It also has to regulate its relations with all of its neighbors, including Kosovo,” said Stinner, adding that this does not necessarily mean international and legal recognition of Kosovo.
