An ex-Djindjic family lawyer says no "aggravated circumstances" stand in the way of launching an investigation into the political background of the assassination. Zoran Djindjic was shot and killed in March 2003 while serving as Serbia's prime minister. Members of a disbanded security services unit, JSO, and a crime gang known as the Zemun Clan have been tried and found guilty in the case. Political background of Djindjic murder to be probed? Lawyer Rajko Danilovic says that "everything is in the hands of Special Prosecutor for Organized Crime Miljko Radisavljevic", when it comes to probing the possible political background to the murder. For the first time, the opposition Serb Radical Party (SRS) has joined calls for such an investigation. The issue has once again been raised in the public after arrests of Zemun gang members Milos Simovic and Sretko Kalinic. Spokeswoman of the Special Court Maja Kovacevic pointed out in her reaction that former Director of the Military Security Agency (VBA) Aca Tomic, among others, was charged under the first indictment which was dropped by Prosecutor Jovan Prijic in the beginning of the trial against the Djindjic assassins. “The situation is the same as if it had been ruled in the case, there cannot be two trials on the same charges, which means that the prosecutor dropped the case, the decision about the suspension of the criminal proceeding was made and it’s definitely a done deal. Whether the prosecutor can go in and whether he will go into the proceedings for some other acts, I can’t tell you that,” she said. Meantime, Vladan Batic and Branislav Lecic of the Christian Democratic Party of Serbia (DHSS) recently pointed to the role of former Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica. They sent a letter demanding answers about the political background of Djindjic’s assassination. Kostunica does not want to engage in such exchange, said Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) spokesman Petar Petrovic. “Providing an answer to lies only means giving legitimacy to those lies, DSS won’t deal with that,” he said. At the same time, Danilovic says that the prosecution should question not only Kostunica and Tomic, but also Rade Bulatovic and Dragan Jocic, a former BIA chief and interior minister respectively. According to the lawyer, nothing should prevent the special prosecutor for organized crime to launch such an investigation. “We have the prosecutor’s promise, that’s a big thing, there’s no business without him, he’s the one who is giving the initiative, who determines a framework of the initiative,” Danilovic stressed. The SRS, whose leader Vojislav Seselj had voluntarily surrendered to the Hague Tribunal a month before the assassination, also said they want to find out "real and complete truth" about the murder.
