Opposition DSS party leader Vojislav Kostunuca spoke about Serbia's "wrong national policy" on Thursday. It only prioritizes accession to the EU, he said, and urged for a new national policy. "Serbia needs new national policy" "Serbia needs a new national policy which would be focused not only on the EU path but primarily on the country itself and development that would be modeled on European values and standards," Kostunuca believes. "The goal does not shut out the possibility that Serbia as a whole, if possible, becomes a EU member state in the future. A new national policy should advocate open dialogue with the EU in order to foster mutually useful relations based on appropriate agreements," he said. The DSS leader and Serbian prime minister for two terms believes that Serbia's policy should timely be changed and adjusted to realistic goals and international trends, because otherwise both the country and its citizens would pay the cost of prolonged "political deceit". According to Kostunuca, Serbia will have to find an alternative path to the government's policy that EU accession has no alternative, which was established two years ago, since the EU has put its enlargement process on backtrack due to the problems it is facing. "There is a basic and insurmountable obstacle between the Serbian Constitution which states that Kosovo is an inalienable part of Serbia and the decision of the 22 EU member states to recognize its independence. That is why all claims that Serbia and Kosovo are two separate issues are nothing but mere propaganda," the DSS leader concluded. Vojislav Kostunica (Beta, file)
