“Slovakia supports Serbia's EU bid”

Foreign ministers of Serbia and Slovakia, Vuk Jeremic and Miroslav Lajcak, met on Thursday on Bratislava. They said that the EU-Western Balkans summit in Sarajevo earlier this week had confirmed the EU's commitment to continued enlargement. “Slovakia supports Serbia's EU bid” Speaking at a joint news conference, Jeremic stated that both countries had similar views of the future and common strategic goals, which Serbia would be able to accomplish only after the Western Balkan countries have joined the EU. Jeremic reaffirmed EU membership as Serbia's priority, adding that Slovakia supports the ratification of the Stabilization and Association Agreement between Serbia and the EU, as well as Serbia's EU membership application. Lajcak stated that the political relations between the two countries are at a high level and announced their tighter cooperation. The Slovakian minister reiterated his country's firm stand on refusing to recognize Kosovo, for which Jeremic expressed his gratitude. The two officials also discussed Hungary's new law on dual citizenship, with Lajcak explaining the reasons why Slovakia finds the law unacceptable. Jeremic and Lajcak signed memoranda of understanding regarding the two ministries' cooperation in European integration and diplomatic academies. During his visit to Slovakia, Jeremic also met with Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic, who noted that his country would continue supporting Serbia in its European integration, because Serbia belongs in the EU.
