Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic met in Bratislava on Thursday with Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic. He commended Serbia for “preparing well” for EU membership, said reports. FM meets with Slovak president “Slovakia will continue to assist Serbia in her EU integrations ambition, because we are convinced that you belong in the EU,” Gasparovic addressed the visiting Serbian minister. “Security, solidarity and cooperation with neighbors are a guarantee that Serbia is well-prepared for future membership,” the Slovak leader continued. “It is our foreign policy priority to join the EU,” Jeremic told reporters, but added that when it came to NATO, Serbia wished to remain neutral, and had “no intention of seeking membership” in the western military alliance. Jeremic further noted that he believed Serbia's neutrality would not threaten the stability of the Western Balkans, “any more than Sweden's neutrality threatens Scandinavia”. The Serbian minister also expressed Belgrade's gratitude for Slovakia's strong support in the EU integrations process, and that country's decisive stance not to recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo. “Kosovo's problems should be solved through dialog, not unilaterally,” Jeremic stressed. The two officials also discussed economic cooperation, which was described as lacking in intensity. “Slovakia is interested in joint investment that would enable us to cooperate more intensively,” Gasparovic stated. While in Bratislava, Jeremic is also scheduled to meet with his Slovak counterpart, Miroslav Lajcak.
