The European Union will be naming a special representative for the Western Balkans after the Sarajevo summit, according to Belgrade daily Danas. The regional gathering is planned for June 2 in the Bosnian capital. Daily: EU to name Balkan envoy The newspaper writed that the most serious candidates for the position currently are former Bosnia-Herzegovina high representatives Paddy Ashdown and Miroslav Lajcak. The future envoy would we reporting to the EU Council of Ministers, which means that he would be part of apparatus of Foreign and Security Policies Chief Catherine Ashton, who would be officially naming the representative. Ashdown, who is currently not working as an official anywhere, and Lajcak, who is the foreign minister of Slovakia, are still interested in what is going on in the Balkans, the daily writes. Ashdown recently spoke about having a special representative for the Western Balkans publicly. “A special envoy for Bosnia-Herzegovina would not be a good idea, but it would be more than a good idea for the Western Balkans,” he told Sarajevo media recently. The British politician also said that he hoped that the EU would have “partners” by way of similar representatives appointed by the U.S., “and maybe even Russia and Turkey”. British Foreign Secretary William Hague has also shown support for the idea, according to the newspaper.
