Minister for Human and Minority Rights Svetozar Ciplic says statistical regions have no political content. He added that they were important only regarding the EU's pre-accession funds and that "there is resistance because Serbia has a historical frustration with secessionism ever since 1974." Statistical regions “no threat” Ciplic said that elections for national (ethnic) councils to be held on June 6 will show that Serbia is a country where minorities have no fear of expressing their nationalities and that it is truly a multi-ethnic state. In an interview for Belgrade-based daily Vecernje Novosti, Ciplic said that 450,000 out of 600,000 people who belong to an ethnic minority and have the right to vote in Serbia entered the voting registers. "This is a significant result and that is why I expect a large turnout. All of this shows that national minorities preserve their identities and do not assimilate," he stressed.
