Police are blocking the entrance of the assembly building in the central Serbian town of Cacak, prohibiting opposition officials from entering the hall. Along with the opposition councilors, many journalists, directors of public companies that were supposed to report according to the agenda on Monday, and officials of several non-government organizations were also standing outside the building, reports said. Cacak opposition barred from assembly building Assembly Speaker Veljko Bogdanovic of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) passed a decision effective as of April 21, barring the opposition officials from the assembly after they blocked the speaking podium and seats designated for the presidents, because of a decision passed for assembly meetings to be broadcast on a radio station instead of the local television station. Bogdanovic said on Friday that the opposition would not be allowed to attend the remainder of the assembly session, while opposition officials said that they would be present at the coming meetings. Assembly security and police have been blocking the entrance of the building since 10:30 CET without incident. Opposition leaders have called the prohibition scandalous and announced that they would be taking it up with the government ministry with jurisdiction in this case. They also said that the situation was evidence that new local elections must be announced. The ruling coalition in Cacak is made up of New Serbia, the Democratic Party of Serbia, the SPS-PUPS-JS coalition and the Serb Radical Party, while the opposition consists of the Democratic Party, Serb Renewal Movement, Liberal Democratic Party, G17 plus and the Citizens’ Group for Cacak.
