EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele will be in Belgrade meeting with Serbian senior officials on Wednesday. "The further progress of Serbia's European integration will be one of my priorities, taking into consideration the importance of this country for stability in the Western Balkans region. I want to confirm that the Commission is prepared to prepare its opinion on Serbia's application for EU candidacy as soon as the demand arrives from the EU Council," he told daily Vecernje Novosti. EU commissioner in Belgrade visit Fuele said that it is important for Serbia to maintain its tempo of reforms, continue implementing the program for European integration and fulfill all obligations of the interim trade agreement. "I can be expected to act fairly and as a friendly partner, ready to listen and help, but I will not compromise on our basic values: democracy, the rule of law, the protection of basic rights, sustainable development and friendly relations with neighbors," he said. Fuele said that he will observe the "main challenges that Serbia needs to face in order to be capable of fulfilling the necessary conditions for EU membership" during his mandate. He said that full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, the fight against organized crime and corruption, independent courts and harmonizing the obligations of the Stabilization and Association Agreement are also key priorities for Serbia.
