U.S. pulling troops from Kosovo

The U.S. will be withdrawing 570 of its troops out of Kosovo in the next two months as part of a NATO restructuring, media in Priština have reported.

The U.S. will be withdrawing 570 of its troops out of Kosovo in the next two months as part of a NATO restructuring, media in Pristina have reported. The move coincides with similar reductions by other countries that are part of the NATO-led KFOR. U.S. pulling troops from Kosovo By the end of May, about 830 U.S. troops will be left in Kosovo, as part of Multi-National Brigade-East (MNBE), Capt. Dan Murphy, public affairs officer for MNBE told Stars and Stripes newspaper. Murphy said that officials felt that the number of troops left would be adequate to carry out the missions. “The local institutions, such as the Kosovo police, are really doing a fine job. I’d say the stability of Kosovo is very favorable right now,” he said. U.S. had 7,000 peace troops after the war ended in 1999, more than all other KFOR members. Greece, Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Turkey also have troops in the U.S.-led sector. There are about 10,000 KFOR soldiers in Kosovo now, deployed in five multinational combat groups.
