Leader of the Islamic Community in Serbia Muamer Zukorlic has set up a special scholarship fund for students of the Faculty for Islamic Studies in Novi Pazar. This Islamic community stated that the students had been “illegally deprived of the usual scholarships” by the Ministry of Religion. Scholarship fund for Islamic studies Zukorlic invited "wealthy Muslims" to “give a monthly donation so the students would not suffer as a result of injustice”. The statement adds that collecting of the contributions would start on Monday, November 13, "in all mosques". Meanwhile, the Ministry of Religion rejected the accusations that it discriminated against the students of the Faculty of Islamic Studies when it allegedly deprived them of a right to apply for its scholarships. The ministry stated that they did not differentiate between Muslim students and those of any other religion, who were supported financially during their schooling. “All Muslim and Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) students, provided that they are citizens of Serbia, are eligible to apply for scholarships whether they are studying in the country or abroad,” the statement said, and added that the scholarship application was published on the ministry’s web site, and that all students who met certain criteria could apply. Earlier in the week, the Islamic students staged a protest in Novi Pazar, where they likened the alleged discrimination against them with that which led to the WW2 Holocaust of the Jewish people.
