Parliament extending validity date for passports
7 November 2009 | 12:00 | Source: Tanjug
BELGRADE -- The parliament will pass changes to the passport law in order to extend the validity date for all passports to the end of 2010.

It was first planned to have old passports become invalid by the end of this year.

The draft states that change is needed because the diplomatic-consular headquarters of Serbia in some countries are still not adequately equipped for the acquisition of new biometric passport information.

Because of this, Serbian citizens are waiting many months for their new, biometric passports to be finished in Serbia and then sent abroad, the draft states.

The draft also states that Serbian citizens abroad also use their passports as personal identification documents as well.

“Taking into consideration that the it is almost impossible to issue biometric passports in the earlier determined deadline, which would lead to many consequences for our citizens living abroad, it is being proposed that old passports will remain valid until December 31, 2010,” the draft states.

The law calls for persons under the age of three to have passports issued to them for a period of three years, and for persons in between the age of three and 14 for a period of five years, because of the constant changes in appearance during that time of growth, with the goal of improving the safety of citizens and stopping human trafficking.
