The president of the Vojvodina Executive Council has denied that there is a rift within the ruling Democratic Party (DS). Bojan Pajtic, who is also a party official, said it was not true that the DS "branches in Vojvodina and Belgrade" cannot see eye to eye over the draft Vojvodina statute. DS official denies split over Vojvodina statute He told Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti in an interview published on Sunday that the speculation about the trouble within the party amounted to "cheering by the party's opponents for something of the kind to happen". "The Democratic Party, its philosophy and maturity of the people who form its backbone is superior to any rumor mill," stated Pajtic. He was also quoted as saying that he hopes to be elected for a third term at the helm of the provincial administration, but said that he would "like the challenge of becoming the EU commissioner for education and science" – something that, he conceded, "is not realistic at this time", considering that Serbia is not even a member state. Speaking about the controversial statute draft, Pajtic said there was "much ill intention – but that is part of the atmosphere where political parties feed on stories about alleged rifts in big parties, treason, claims about Vojvodina's secession, domestic and foreign enemies". "With the statute we only wished for a possibility of an even more accelerated development of the province. All other terminological and metaphysical issues are completely irrelevant. The stories that are trying to create an enemy of Serbia out of Vojvodina are to say the least unfair," said he.
