Valjevo police have prohibited an announced rally of war veterans on Sunday, who were expected to block the Belgrade-Bar highway in protest. In Saturday night’s statement from the Interior Ministry, it was said that the rally was prohibited “based on the total security evaluation that traffic obstruction would occur, and that the safety of people and property could also be at risk during the gathering.” Veterans’ rally prohibited in Valjevo Protest leader Ljubomir Bradic said earlier that he did not agree to refrain from blocking the highway at the last meeting with city and police officials. The veterans said that if they refrained from blocking the highway, a government minister would have to come to Valjevo, and according to local media, the protesters refused a meeting in Belgrade on Monday with Labor and Social Policies Minister Rasim Ljajic. The veterans have been protesting since November 2008, demanding daily wages owed to them for participation in the 1999 Kosovo conflict, for which over 2000 charges have been filed in the Valjevo Municipal Court against the state.
