President of the Vojvodina League of Social Democrats, Nenad Canak, said that Serbian cannot be regionalized before Vojvodina’s status is confirmed. “The talk about Vojvodina having more or less authority is pointless now. What Vojvodina needs is to find its place in the Serbian legal system. And that is complicated, because there is a strong, or even dominant, group of people in Belgrade that would want Vojvodina to disappear,” Canak said. “First status, then regionalization” He said that the Serbian government has jurisdiction over some municipalities and cities, and over Vojvodina, while the province does not have any authority over municipalities and cities on its territory. “We now have a bizarre situation with the provincial administration standing to the side of a vertical government. That does not exist anywhere. Vojvodina first must enter the Serbian legal system, and only then can the citizens in the rest of the state obtain the possibility of organizing themselves,” Canak said.
