Serbian police (MUP) Gendarmerie Commander Col. Bratislav Dikic said that the situation in southern Serbia is stable, but that small armed attacks are possible. "According to operative data which we have, we expect that there could be some smaller attacks, armed provocations against officials of the state institutions, but the Gendarmerie will do everything to make sure that the people are safe in any territory of Serbia, including the municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja," Dikic said. Gendarmerie commander: South is stable The Gendarmerie is responsible for securing the land security zone along the administrative border crossing with Kosovo. Two Gendarmerie officials were wounded last month in the village of Lucani near Bujanovac, when their vehicle was attacked, and several days later, an explosion in a Presevo building wounded another two persons. “A police investigation is ongoing and I hope that we will have some concrete results soon and find those who perpetrated the terrorist attack on the gendarmerie and the citizens recently,” Dikic said. He added that the analysis of the situation over the last several years and the armed attacks, shows that the citizens and state officials are threatened, but the Gendarmerie is doing everything to ensure the safety of the people. Asked about the demands of the Albanian politicians in southern Serbia to have the gendarmerie leave the region, Dikic said that the gendarmerie is not threatening anyone in the municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, but rather, making sure that the people living there are safe. Dikic said that there are some citizens in these municipalities that still have weapons and military equipment and reminded that the gendarmerie has found and confiscated such weapons on several occasions.
