Serbs living in Kosovo enclave of Gracanica have begun to pay lump sum payment of EUR 26 per household for electricity. Some 5,000 Serbs there have been cut off from the grid two weeks ago by the Kosovo company in charge of distributing electricity, KEK. Electricity to be restored to Serbs in Kosovo enclave Dragutin Jovanovic, a member of the Gracanica negotiation team, said that the agreement to make the payment was made on Wednesday with KEK representatives. It was agreed that Gracanica residents will pay the first part of their EUR 26 per household, in order for the power to be turned on. The resident are supposed to pay the same amount next month as well. Jovanovic said that the electricity will be turned on once 70 percent of the households pay the installment. “In the coming weeks, KEK will register and seal the electricity meters, and will install meters on newly built homes in the village,” Jovanovic said. He said that negotiations will then be continued regarding a collective contract with KEK, which is an issue for Serbs because of electricity bill debts that are outstanding since 1999. Gracanica residents have started paying the installment payments in large numbers, Jovanovic said, adding that by 13:00 CET today, some 500 of the 1,000 households had already made their payments. According to KEK sources this afternoon, the enclave households should have power reconnected today.
