Socialist Party of Serbia leader Ivica Dacic says that his party will not bring down the government for the sake of forming municipal authorities. “Two principles are getting mixed up: uniting the opposition over toppling the government and forming governments at local level. Surely no-one expects us to take part in toppling the government,” Dacic told journalists at the Palace of Serbia after meeting with Socialist International President Georgios Papandreou. "SPS won't sacrifice govt. for municipalities" The SPS leader said that the Serb Progressive Party had announced that early elections were the basis for cooperation between the SNS and the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), but that he had not heard the DSS’s position. “If anyone thinks that we’re going to discuss NATO and the EU, or early elections, in Vozdovac and Zemun, then they’re sorely mistaken. We won’t be discussing those themes,” he said. Dacic added that it was unknown at what level these talks would be held, as it was a matter of city leaderships forming municipal governments, not an agreement at national level. “I’m glad that no-one can form a majority without us. Our priority is to duplicate the government at republic level, but there are places where that’s not possible,” said the SPS leader. He said that no-one had held any official talks with the SPS or the parties gathered around the SPS coalition—the Pensioners’ Party and United Serbia—which was why he could not say in advance how governments would be formed in the three municipalities in question. “We’re ready for those talks, it’s just that we certainly won’t be discussing the principles that have appeared in the media. Someone might even be mentioning those principles to forestall talks with us,” said Dacic. The SPS leader could not confirm whether his party’s officials would be taking part in the talks between the DSS and SNS over forming local governments in the three municipalities, as he had only just returned from Russia and no official invitation had yet arrived.
