Czech FM Jan Kohout has expressed his dissatisfaction with the progress made by the Western Balkans in EU integration during Prague’s EU presidency. “I am not satisfied because we were not able to achieve progress, which we had as a goal before taking over the presidency,” he told daily Vecernje Novosti. Czech FM unhappy with integration progress He said that some good results had been achieved—eg., visa liberalization progress and the opening of new relations between the EU and prospective member states—but he said that there had been no time or chance to achieve everything that had been wanted. Kohout confirmed that he believed that the European integration of the region must be sped up and said that the Czech Republic had done everything it could to improve the process during its presidency, but, he admitted, to no avail. However, he said that the Czech presidency was not to blame for the lack of success, adding that the reasons for the slow progress were already widely known. He said that he was unsure whether the time was right to go through with the Italian and Romanian proposal to organize an EU summit with the Western Balkan countries, where support would once again be offered to their European future. “I am not completely sure that this is the right moment to begin this idea,” Kohout said.
