Cypriot Defense Minister Costas Papacostas says that his country will never recognize Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration. “Solving the Kosovo problem should be based on the Helsinki Charter and international law, as well as documents of the United Nations,” Papacostas said after a meeting with his Serbian counterpart Dragan Sutanovac. “Cyprus supports Serbian Kosovo stance” He said that his country believed that Serbia was an integral part of Europe and that it should become a member of the European Union, if its government and people wanted to join. Sutanovac said that Belgrade and Nicosia’s “principled stances” safeguarded the interests of both Serbia and international law. “Even though they do not share a border, Serbia and Cyprus share the same security risks and threats,” Sutanovac said. “Relations in our security structures are on a very high level,” the Serbian defense minister said. As part of his visit, Papacostas was given a guided tour of a Serbian Army base, before meeting with Sutanovac to discuss closer cooperation in the field of military schooling between Serbia and Cyprus.
