Sandzak Democratic Party (SDP) leader Rasim Ljajic is satisfied with his party’s performance at the Belgrade local elections. Speaking to daily Politika, Ljajic said he planned to raise the party’s profile throughout Serbia, while, in terms of potential coalition partners, he said he would first be speaking to the Democratic Party (DS). DS to be first port of call for SDP, says Ljajic “Our participation at the elections in Belgrade can be treated as a kind of new option. We’ve only just stepped out of the region on to the wider political scene,“ Ljajic said. “We’ll definitely try to present ourselves as a state-building party operating throughout the whole of Serbia. We’re also thinking about changing the party’s name, thus giving it a clearer social democratic profile. That would be accompanied by developing the party’s infrastructure throughout Serbia,“ he explained. The SDP leader put the minority party’s success in Belgrade down to saturation created by the big, established parties. “One of the reasons for our success was undoubtedly the fact that I, as leader of the party, have long been engaged in ministerial posts,“ he said. Ljajic said that “when it comes to coalitions, the SDP will first speak with the DS, as its strategic partner.“ Rasim Ljajic (FoNet, archive)
