President Boris Tadic says that the ideas of decentralization and regionalization will not lead to a division of the country. “Regionalization is not a division of Serbia, but a sharing of riches and creating the possibility for under-developed parts of the country to develop equally. It’s actually a way of fighting against division in Serbia based on rich and poor parts,” Tadic told daily Danas. Tadic: Regionalization doesn’t mean division He said that the essential idea of regionalization and decentralization should be focused on ensuring better living conditions for the people , and not creating a feud that could call the country’s integrity into question. “The contemporary European concept of decentralization does not endanger a country’s integrity, but adds to its stability. It is not an idea of creating a region that would look like Vojvodina or Kosovo, because this is a completely different time that requires a new kind of regionalization,” the president explained. Tadic said that the Vojvodina statute had to be in accordance with the Constitution, while the law on the transfer of responsibilities and the statue should not be left hanging, but be addressed by “fitting them into the idea of regionalization and balanced regional development in Serbia.” Speaking of visa liberalization, the president said that he did not want to name any dates, but that he was working on making it happen as soon as possible. “We are getting support from important countries, that is why I’m expecting visas to be scrapped by the end of this year or the beginning of next year. That is a realistic goal. We have waited to too long in line for visas and been degraded for too long. Visa liberalization will finally lift the last of the sanctions from the 1990s,” Tadic said.
