Workers from a Kragujevac-based plant, who have spent 18 days on a hunger strike, last night reached a deal with the factory owners. The workers decided to accept an agreement – brokered by the ministries of labor and economy – with Partizan tanning factory managing board chairman Jovan Aleksic. Kragujevac hunger strike drama ends The deal will allow workers to receive severance pay according to the law and a possibility to have their years of service consolidated. This came after nearly three weeks of the hunger strike and five months of protests. The deal also calls for the 73 workers who accepted it to give up their right to overdue pay. According to them, no agreement could be reached before because there were "no firm guarantees". The workers blame the state and the Privatization and Shareholder funds for their predicament. It is precisely the state, via its labor and economy ministries, that will oversee the implementation of the new deal. Labor Minister Rasim Ljajic and some officials from his ministry have called on other workers "not to resort to such radical manner of protest in the future", and instead "turn to dialogue".
