Ex-JNA officer's sentence tripled

The Hague Tribunal Appeals Chamber has more than tripled the sentence of Veselin Sljivancanin to 17 years for crimes committed in Vukovar. The Tribunal tripled the sentence of the former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) major after finding him guilty of the murder of 194 prisoners-of-war at the Ovcara farm, near Vukovar. Ex-JNA officer's sentence tripled The Appeals Chamber also upheld the first instance verdict for JNA Colonel Mile Mrksic, who was sentenced to 20 years for the same crime. The first instance chamber sentenced Colonel Sljivancanin to five years in prison for failure to prevent abuse of prisoners from Vukovar hospital, even though he had been responsible for their safety. Mrksic was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the same crime. The judges ruled that Mrksic had been responsible for withdrawing a JNA unit that had been guarding the prisoners at the Ovcara farm, thus “facilitating and encouraging” their murder. Territorial defense members and paramilitaries killed some 200 prisoners at the farm on November 21, 1999. Both the prosecution and defense appealed the initial verdict. The third officer in the Vukovar Three case, Miroslav Radic, was freed of all charges.
