The Serbian state institutions' cooperation in the fight against terrorism has "improved significantly" since the forming of the new government. Serbian executive organs and security agencies, especially customs, criminal investigations and border police, Security-Intelligence Agency (BIA) and other security services have significantly improved their mutual cooperation in the fight against terrorism since the government was formed in July last year, says a State Department report. "New govt. cooperates better on terror" It reminds that the police (MUP) has two tactical units designed to fight terrorism: the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ), and the Counter-Terrorist Unit (PTJ). The government has formed a criminal investigations unit used for the same purpose that acts within the Police Directorate, the report continued, and added that the United States had provided training and assistance to Serbian authorities in the fight against terrorism. The reports adds that in May 2008 a seminar was held for policemen from Serbia and Montenegro, and that in April, the trial of a group of Islamic fundamentalists, known as Wahhabis, started in Belgrade, on charges of illegal possession of arms and attempted murder. The Sandzak group, the report reminds, planned to attack local religious leaders, and infrastructure in Novi Pazar and Belgrade, including the U.S. embassy.
