A survey conducted in several Sandzak municipalities shows there are deep ethnic divisions among the residents of this region in southwestern Serbia. There is evident ethnic distance between Bosniaks (Muslims) and Serbs, the two most numerous ethnicities in the municipalities of Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Prijepolje and Priboj. Ethnic divisions deep in Sandzak This stems from conflicts from the distant and near past, says a poll conducted a part of a project titled, Improving Good Governance and Development of Civil Society in Southwestern Serbia. NGO Argument held a news conference in Prijepolje to present the survey, where its representatives said that the least "ethnic distance" is present in Sjenica, while it is the deepest in Novi Pazar, the region's largest town. "The most rejected peoples are Vlachs, Romas, Chinese, Slovaks and Albanians. The most rejected social relations are entering marriage or having one's brother or sister enter marriage with a member of those nations," said NGO's Anela Racanin. The organization's president, Slobodan Martinovic, announced a round table for April 1 with the same subject, that will invite NGOs, religious institutions, political parties and education workers. The survey was conducted on a representative sample, while the ethnic structure of those interviewed was chosen according to the last census, this NGO explained.
