U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried was assigned to a new position. Reports said that this came as a decision by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. New U.S. assistant sec. of state for Europe Fried will stay in his position until the person tapped to replace him, Phil Gordon, is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, said U.S. State Department spokesman Robert Wood. According to Wood, Clinton named Fried a special envoy in charge of the transfer of detainees from Guantanamo Bay on Cuba to other countries. U.S.-based political analyst Obrad Kesic told B92 that Gordon is "one of the highly valued American experts on Europe". "He is one of the key people who have for a long time been advocating closer ties between America and Europe, based on America taking into account some key European interests and having a different approach to Europe than the previous administration – treating European partners as true partners," said Kesic. "The Obama administration trend directly shows that America will invest a lot of effort to actually set its relations with Europe right." However, Kesic pointed out that Balkans is not one of the fields Gordon specialized in and that he has dealt with the problems of the region via the Balkan states' relations with the EU. Still, this analyst believes that the regional countries, Serbia included, "will benefit from this appointment". "Considering the very clear American position that the Western Balkans should join the EU as soon as possible, I think we can expect to see some good consequences for the interests of Serbia and other countries in the Balkans." "The biggest issue that exists in the relations with the U.S. is the policy of conditioning. This will be a question mark in Mr. Gordon's relationship toward Serbia and the Balkans. If he is convinced that such policy should continue, we can expect him to become one of the key people in coordination with the EU, when it comes to that policy," said Kesic.
