A ruling Democratic Party (DS) official in Vojvodina has denied that a new text of the draft Vojvodina statute is being prepared. Dragoslav Petrovic, whip for a DS-led coalition group in the Vojvodina assembly, said in a statement that the news is "pure disinformation", launched by "some destructive political forces that do not mean well". DS official: No new statute in works "There is not even a formal possibility for such a procedure, nor is there elementary political will of the majority of citizens and their authentic representatives in the assemblies of the province and of Serbia," he wrote. Petrovic announced that the work of a commission set up to draw a draft accompanying law defining Vojvodina's competencies would be finalized "soon". Parliament should then adopt this legislation along with the statute. The Vojvodina assembly, continued Petrovic, will perform "only a legal-technical harmonization" of the status with this law. "That will enable for both documents to be adopted at the same time, and for the Vojvodina budget to be passed by the end of March," he explained. Although approved by the provincial assembly last year, the draft statue has had trouble being adopted in the Serbian parliament. The document came under fire from the opposition who criticized it as unconstitutional. The ruling Socialists (SPS) also announced that they would not vote in favor of any legislation that creates "a state within a state".
