The EC is determined to continue the process of scrapping visa restrictions for Western Balkan countries headed for EU integration, says Olli Rehn. The EU enlargement commissioner also said that all Balkan countries would join the EU based on merit, but that before the EU doors opened Balkan border and other disputes would need to be considered, reports the BBC. Rehn calls for visa abolishment Rehn pointed out that the Western Balkans were surrounded by the EU, and that citizens of Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina could not travel to neighboring countries without obtaining a visa—in itself a laborious procedure. He said that, therefore, Western Balkan countries that had advanced furthest towards the EU should have visa restrictions abolished by the end of the year. Rehn pointed out that the Western Balkans were surrounded by the EU, and that citizens of Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina could not travel to neighboring countries without obtaining a visa—in itself a laborious procedure.
