Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica on Saturday urged a withdrawal the proposed Vojvodina statute. The former prime minister described the draft document anti-constitutional, and called for the making of a new one, based on a national consensus, that would secure the autonomous position of Vojvodina province in keeping with the Constitution of Serbia. Kostunica: Withdraw anti-constitutional statute "That is the only solution at this point and the representatives of the authorities are obliged to secure such a solution in keeping with their oath - when they swore to uphold the Constitution and to preserve the integrity of Serbia," Kostunica said in a statement sent to Tanjug. "Any further insistence of the authorities on the adoption of this draft statute would mean that the ruling coalition is consciously and deliberately toppling the constitutional and legal order of the country, and consequently also Serbia," Kostunica said. "The anti-constitutional draft statute of Vojvodina cannot serve as a foundation for stability and progress, neither in Vojvodina nor in Serbia," the DSS president said. The provincial assembly in Novi Sad adopted the draft on Oct. 15, 2008, and it is now up to the Serbian parliament to approve it. The document has been the subject of hot debate, with the Serbian Orthodox Church weighing in this week via a letter sent to the top state officials, urging for the statute to be rejected.
