Serbs from northern Kosovo began a one-hour blockade of the main highway at the Brnjak and Jarinje administrative crossings at 11:00 CET. Representatives of the municipalities of Leposavic, Zubin Potok, Zvecan, and Kosovska Mitrovica addressed the protestors at the rally, which proceeded without any incidents. Serbs protest in northern Kosovo The speakers invited citizens to attend a rally in northern Kosovska Mitrovica, set for Tuesday, February 10. Zvecan Municipal President Dragisa Milovic said that the Serbs of northern Kosovo were protesting against the formation of the Kosovo Security Forces and EULEX’s unilateral decision to set up "customs crossings" at Jarinje and Brnjak in the north of the province. "This is just a warning to the representatives of the international community to demonstrate that Serbs will not permit the creation of a border between Kosovo and the mother state of Serbia. The recent beginning of registration by EULEX of goods entering the north of the province from Serbia proper is just the first step and an attempt at creating a border, which we find unacceptable," Milovic warned. Serbs in northern Kosovo burned down checkpoints at the Brnjak and Jarinje crossings on Feb. 19 last year, saying they would not allow the establishment of customs for the “sham Kosovo state.” EULEX last week began registering goods at these crossings in northern Kosovo and announced that they would not charge duty for the time being. Serbs blocked the exit from Zvencan to the village of Veliko Rudare, as well as the exit from Zubin Potok to Brnjak and Ribaric. Leposavic Municipal President Jovan Miladinovic called on the state leadership to support the Kosovo Serbs, stating that this was the only way that the Serb community could keep this part of the province in Kosovo. Around 20 EULEX, KFOR and Kosovo police vehicles were stationed at the crossings. Serb political representatives yesterday adopted a declaration stating that the security situation in northern Kosovo had deteriorated, and that the presence of the Kosovo Security Forces and Kosovo institutions in the north was unacceptable.
