Boris Tadic says that the most important task ahead for the state policy next year will be to preserve people's jobs. The Serbian president and Democratic Party (DS) leader was speaking during a meeting of his party's main board in Subotica on Sunday, when he said that "difficult days" are ahead for Serbia, and added that this fact "has been properly taken into account with the budget draft the government sent to parliament". Tadic calls for protection of jobs in 2009 "By adopting the budget we are protecting the job of each person in Serbia. That is the most important state issue in the next year," said Tadic. He also described the draft as "not ideal", but added that, "if it were ideal from the standpoint of economic expertise it would be painful for many citizens". "The budget is being adopted under realistic political circumstances, and everyone must understand that the economic dimension of reality is not the only one," he was quoted as saying. Tadic described the budget draft, yet to be approved in parliament, as "the first measure that the government will take to grapple with the consequences of the world economic crisis that will shake Serbia next year". Tadic also advised citizens that the election campaign promises, "made at a time when the world financial situation could not be foreseen", are now impossible to achieve within the previously set deadlines. But he added that those promises will "certainly be fulfilled during the current government's mandate". Tadic in Subotica on Sunday (Tanjug)
