The government has unanimously approved the Security Council’s decision and adopted a declaration on the deployment of the EULEX mission in Kosovo. The principles set forth in UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s report that were accepted via a statement from the chair stipulate that EULEX will respect Resolution 1244 and Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Govt. accepts UN SC decision After the cabinet meeting, Kosovo Minister Goran Bogdanovic said that the Security Council’s decision meant that EULEX would not be functioning on the basis of the Martti Ahtisaari plan. “EULEX will respect UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty in full. The EULEX mission does not involve the implementation of the Martti Ahtisaari plan, it constitutes a comprehensive proposal for resolving Kosovo’s status,“ explained Bogdanovic. “EULEX will also operate under UN auspices in Kosovo, embodying its neutral status and implementing the six-point plan agreed on between Serbia and the UN,“ he said. The minister said that the deployment of the EULEX mission in Serb regions would not progress as fast as in other parts of the province. He said that this was “proof that we’re returning to talks again, and that we can solve Kosovo’s status in a way that is acceptable to all citizens living in our south Serbian province.“ Bogdanovic said that the government was concerned by the rhetoric coming from Pristina, which, he said, was reminiscent of March 17, 2004. “We’ve received firm assurances that nothing like that will happen and that there’ll be no repeat of March 17, 2004. The international community carries huge responsibility, it has a mandate to ensure the security of all Kosovo’s citizens,“ said the minister. “We’re very concerned, the rhetoric reaching us from Pristina is very disturbing and is reminiscent of March 17, 2004. We have, in all our talks with the international community, pointed to this danger,“ he said. Goran Bogdanovic (FoNet, archive)
