JS leader Dragan Markovic said indirectly that Serbia should accept the EULEX mission, stressing though that Kosovo independence was out of the question. "For me there is no difference whether the international forces are called EULEX or UNMIK, because United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolution 1244 specifies the presence of international forces, and 95 percent of the states present in EULEX are part of UNMIK too," Markovic pointed out. JS: EULEX to come to Kosovo “There are, therefore, no differences except that the term EULEX is mentioned in the Martti Ahtisaari plan, a document which has been rejected by Serbia, but if it helps step up economic cooperation and Serbia's accession to the European Union, and if EULEX is already there, carrying out its mandate, Serbia shouldn’t waste too much time over it," Markovic said. At a joint press conference with deputy U.S. ambassador Jennifer Brush, the JS leader said that he did not want other parties to “twist” his words, reiterating that for him, Kosovo independence was unacceptable. He said that the JS advocated the defense of Serbia’s integrity, and was for cooperation with the U.S. in order for the country “to move forward” and to create new jobs. “Serbia was bombed in 1999 because of genocide and ethnic cleansing, and we went through both, but we must not go backwards, we must go forwards,” he stressed. Brash said it was encouraging to have the backing of her host in Jagodina. “What’s most heartening is your support for Serbia’s European future, particularly at this critical time for your country. Serbia’s future is in partnership and EU integration, and the U.S. will continue to give its support on that path. Thanks to your efforts, investment in Jagodina is growing all the time, and new opportunities are opening up for Jagodina’s citizens,” said the deputy ambassador. Dragan Markovic (FoNet, archive)
