A spokeswoman for Javier Solana told a Belgrade newspaper that the EULEX mission is the main instrument for achieving stability in Kosovo. EU diplomats confirmed for daily Vecernje Novosti that there will be no demands made of Serbia to recognize Kosovo’s independence in order to have a chance of becoming an EU member state. “That, however, does not mean that the EU will not demand that Belgrade indirectly accepts the elements of Kosovo’s independence,“ the source told Vecernje Novosti. “First, the issue of cooperation with EULEX will be discussed, since even countries in the EU that did not recognize Kosovo’s independence support the mission. Serbia will have a hard time getting out of the situation without making concessions,“ the source added.
