DS Vice-President Dragan Sutanovac says that any coalition with the newly-formed Serb Progressive Party (SNS) would be, politically, “absolutely unnatural”. “I don’t think there is any kind of chance right now of planning a Democratic Party (DS)-SNS coalition,” Sutanovac told Politika. Sutanovac rules out SNS as partner He added that as far he was concerned SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic and Serb Radical Party (SRS) leader Vojislav Seselj were “one and the same”. “The fact that there’s been an internal battle for dominance within the SRS does not mean that those that have left the SRS are in any way better than the ones they’ve left behind. On the contrary. But, it’s not for me to judge whether Nikolic will disown Seselj as such,” he said. Asked whether the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) would be more palatable than the SNS in the event of the ruling coalition being a vote or two short in parliament, Sutanovac said that in that event, the coalition that is functioning at Belgrade level is working much better than would be the case in a coalition with the SNS. The minister said that he had been surprised by the arrest of his long-standing party colleague Zrenjanin Mayor Goran Knezevic, and that he hoped that the investigation would prove that the authorities were mistaken. “At the moment, he is under investigation, the indictment and trial are both still to come… I’d like it if the investigation proved that the authorities had made a mistake, but if they haven’t, he won’t receive any protection from the DS or the government,” he underlined. Sutanovac, the defense minister, reiterated that there was no rift between him and President Boris Tadic at either professional or private level, pointing out that the president had praised his work at the promotion of the new generation of Serbian Army sub-lieutenants and had invited him to attend the presentation of the Quadriga Award in Germany.
