Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic says he "hopes for the best outcome" of the UN General Assembly vote. This UN body will on Oct. 8 decide whether to send Serbia's request for an advisory opinion on the legality of the Kosovo Albanians' unilateral declaration of independence to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). "Serbia hopes for best UN GA outcome" Ahead of his trip to New York, Jeremic told reporters that "two more exceptionally highly charged days remain" ahead of the vote. "On Monday and Tuesday, we will have the last meetings with the countries that back our initiative," he added. Jeremic went on to explain that encounters with those who already side with Serbia on this issue will come with the goal of "fortifying that support, so that they are there when the voting takes place". Some last-ditch lobbying efforts are to be expected from "both sides", according to the foreign minister. Jeremic also explained that pressure is piling on UN member countries to renounce their backing for Serbia and to recognize Kosovo. "Everything is being done in a bid to stop Serbia in this vote, to create an atmosphere that would be unfavorable for the resolution, tabled by Belgrade," he was quoted as saying. "We will do our best to win a majority, to send our question the International Court of Justice, and in that way demonstrate that a peaceful, diplomatic road in the defense of our rights and of international law is the road that can still win the support of the majority of the international community." "We have had many exceptionally powerful and influential countries against us, we still do, but I still hope for the best outcome," said Jeremic. Earlier, Germany's Spiegel quoted the foreign minister as explaining that, as they vote on Wednesday, the UN members will not be deciding whether to support Serbia's political position on Kosovo, but whether Serbia has the right to seek ICJ's advisory opinion. He also repeated that the goal of this initiative is to bring the sides in the Kosovo status crisis back to the negotiating table, but also to in the meantime freeze further recognitions of the ethnic Albanians' declaration. Jeremic also commented on President Boris Tadic's recent comment that hinted Belgrade might consider partitioning the province, by saying that "this is not on the agenda, this is not Serbia's proposal, and never will be".
