The UN Security Council will be formally notified of the results of the probe into the March violence in Kosovska Mitrovica. In the clashes between Kosovo Serb protesters and international peacekeepers in March, one Ukrainian officer died and 64 UNMIK officials were injured, along with 24 KFOR troops and several protesters. Probe into March violence complete According to reports from the Itar-Tas agency, Belgian UN Ambassador Jan Grauls stated that the Secretariat would hold an official briefing of UN Security Council member-states on August 6. Deputy UNMIK Chief Larry Rosin stated that on March 17, units of the international forces had entered the District Court building in Kosovska Mitrovica, where former Serb employees had been protesting for days demanding their jobs back. Russia believes that UNMIK’s use of force was unnecessary and demanded a probe into the incident. An unofficial briefing was held last week, after which Russian UN Ambassador Vitaliy Churkin said that from what he had heard “it is clear that the use of force was absolutely unfounded.” “The most lenient classification of what the UNMIK administration did was a grave mistake, and this in spite of the fact that the administration of the UN Secretariat in New York tried to dissuade them from such moves,” Churkin told the Russian news agency. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon named a special investigative team to shed light on the reasons behind the violence, and investigator Francis M. Ssekandi was assigned to uncover the circumstances surrounding the operation to regain control of the court building in Kosovska Mitrovica.
