Although the first Belgrade assembly session is only a day away, it remains unclear which parties will form a ruling majority. Earlier this week, DS leader Boris Tadic announced that, unless the Socialists (SPS) agree to form local authorities with his party's coalition, the one forged on the state level will be broken too. Unclear local majority in capital At the end of May, the SPS-PUPS coalition signed an agreement in Belgrade with the Radicals (SRS), the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), and New Serbia (NS). Now, the Associated Pensioners (PUPS) say they will "reexamine this decision", because they have "obligations toward their voters". DSS spokesman Andreja Mladenovic said yesterday he believed the coalition deal with the SPS would stand. "We have no information from our coalition partners indicating that there have been any changes in our relationship, that is, regarding the agreement we signed," he said. Meantime Acting Mayor Zoran Alimpic, DS, said that it was now up to the six SPS-PUPS city assembly members to decide the direction Belgrade will take and whether "the Serbian government will be jeopardized". He told the state broadcaster RTS that "a new political reality" took hold with the DS and SPS-led pre-election coalitions forming the Serbian government. In Alimpic's words, this "puts a question mark over the previously signed agreement" between the SPS-PUPS and SRS-DSS-NS. The Belgrade assembly building (FoNet)
