Daily Dnevnik writes that Olli Rehn has signaled to Serbian politicians "to submit an application for EU membership in October". The newspaper cites well-informed sources in Brussels, who said that the condition for receiving the status of a candidate-country is for the interim trade agreement with the EU to come into effect. Daily: Rehn signals "when to send application" This, in turn, will depend on Serbia’s cooperation with the Hague Tribunal. “[EU Enlargement Commissioner] Rehn knows the procedure well for receiving candidate status and only because of diplomatic courtesy he did not want to deny the statements made by Serbian colleagues who said Serbia will become a candidate by December of this year,” the daily writes. The source adds that Rehn wishes to see Serbia to become a candidate for EU membership before he leaves his position in the fall of 2009. But, Serbia could become a candidate in June 2009 at the earliest, and the next possible chance would be in December of the same year, the report continued. “The EU is convinced that Serbia as a candidate would be more constructive regarding the question of Kosovo, especially regarding the EULEX mission in Kosovo,” the anonymous Swedish diplomat told the daily.
