Dragan Djilas believes the coalition grouped round the (SPS) will form a local govt. in Belgrade with the DS, and that he will be elected mayor. “I think I’ll be mayor, primarily because I received the most votes. I can’t make any guarantees the law being such as it is, but I’m getting ready for it, and I want to do what I promised,” the “For a European Serbia” coalition’s candidate for Belgrade mayor told daily Press. DS official still confident of becoming Belgrade mayor He said that he had sought reconciliation with the SPS for some time, both through his work in the National Office and through the National Investment Plan, adding that he had always sought to overcome party and professional differences with everyone, including even the SPS. Asked why he thought it would be bad if the Radicals, the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), and the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) ran Belgrade, Djilas replied that it was logical that the capital, which accounted for a third of Serbia’s overall economic might, had an identical government to that at republic level, and that Belgrade was “the engine of our train that’s heading to Europe and a better life,” and that “Radical leader Vojislav Seselj must not be the train’s driver.” The senior Democratic Party (DS) official said that it was currently impossible to form a governing coalition with the DSS. “We formed a government together in Batocina, we’ll form a coalition in Grocka and in some other Belgrade municipalities, and wherever the ghost of [DSS leader Vojislav] Kostunica’s cabinet is not floating above municipal boards, we work well together,” Djilas explained, adding that it was not possible for the SPS to be with the DS at republic level, but with the Radicals and the DSS in Belgrade. “That’s not possible, as you can’t lead the country in one direction, and Belgrade in another,” he explained.
