President Boris Tadic says the army’s strategic goal is to be a key player in regional stability in the Western Balkans. “We are a country that is heading towards EU membership, we’re a member of the Partnership for Peace program, and a country that the stability of the entire region depends on,” Tadic told journalists after attending a military exercise in the outskirts of Belgrade. "Army to be regional stability factor" He said that Serbia would not give up on preserving its territorial integrity in attempts to achieve its goals, which included EU membership. Tadic said, however, that this did not mean that Serbia wanted a war or was threatening anyone. He said that Serbia’s development, be it technical or economic, was unimaginable without a strong and stable military. The president said that the most difficult period of military reform for Serbia was over and that the second part lay ahead, aimed at improving equipment and training. He said that he expected this phase to be complete by the end of his mandate in 2012-2013. The exercises conducted by over 1,000 graduates from the Military Academy were attended by Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac, Lieutenant-General Zdravko Ponos, military envoys accredited in Belgrade, as well as guests from the Norwegian Military Academy.
