A Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) official says the elections are a good reason for dialogue between his party and the DS. “Even though most of our voters think that the Democratic Party [DS] and the Socialist Party of Serbia are political opponents, that does not mean that we do not have things in common,” the Dusan Bajatovic told the Novi Sad daily Dnevnik. “Right moment for SPS–DS dialogue” He said that the condition for "stronger dialogue" between the parties are “reforms”, and added that “some reforms” have been made in both the SPS and DS. “When talking about DS, the best evidence that their policies now are a lot different than they were at the beginning of the decade is the existence of the LDP, which blames the DS of backing away from the legacy of Zoran Djindjic", Bajatovic said. The Liberal-Democrats (LDP) are an offshoot of the DS, formed in 2004. The SPS ruled Serbia for nearly a decade under the leadership of Slobodan Milosevic. Bajatovic, however, said that the room for cooperation between the two parties is made smaller by the fact that DS is in a coalition for the elections with G17 Plus and the Vojvodina League of Social Democrats, (LSV). “But, the golden rule is – never say never,” Bajatovic clarified, adding that his party would be an “unavoidable factor” in forming the new government in Vojvodina, and also on the state level. The parliamentary and local votes have been called for May 11. Opinion polls suggest that a tight race will be led between the DS-G17-LSV-SPO coalition, and the Serb Radical Party (SRS). In case the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) decided to team up with the Radicals after the elections, small parties, such as the SPS, are expected to have a decisive role in determining which side musters the parliamentary majority to form the next government.
