Belgrade asks Ruecker to cooperate over elections

Minister for Kosovo Slobodan Samardzic late Saturday commented on the organizing of elections in Kosovo. Samardzic, DSS, said he had sent a letter to UNMIK chief Joachim Ruecker, asking him "to cooperate in the organization of local elections in the province, in view of his own and UNMIK's competencies". Belgrade asks Ruecker to cooperate over elections Serbians will vote in parliamentary and local ballots on May 11. "After a conclusion on the organization of parliamentary and local elections in Kosovo, adopted by the Serbian government last Thursday, I personally addressed a letter to special representative Rucker, which he received Friday afternoon," Samardzic told Tanjug news agency. He specified that the government addressed UNMIK with a request to cooperate on the organization of the local vote, in view of the competencies of UNMIK and the special representative, who call such elections. Ruecker commented on the same subject yesterday when he said that "only UNMIK is authorized to organize elections in Kosovo." "Elections organized by the Serbian authorities will not be valid," the German diplomat warned. Ruecker also expressed hope that “Belgrade, because it says that it respects Resolution 1244, will not organize local elections in Kosovo.” In an interview published by the Pristina-based Albanian language daily Koha Ditore, he recalled that according to Security Council Resolution 1244, "Kosovo is under UNMIK's administration, and Belgrade should respect that,” and pointed out that this should also be applied to the holding of Serbia's local and parliamentary elections in Kosovo.

Serbians will vote in parliamentary and local ballots on May 11.
