EAR and EC officials yesterday handed the keys to 40 new jeeps worth EUR 1.1mn to MUP Border Police. At a ceremony at Staro Sajmiste, Deputy Interior Minister Dejan Matic reiterated that the assistance program for the Border Police had begun in 2003, and that significant funds had thus far been invested in the acquisition of technical and other forms of equipment for border observation, as well as the reconstruction of border crossings. MUP receives 40 jeeps from EAR, EC Matic added that a consignment of patrol boats was also due, which would also be used by a unit of the Border Police, as well as a donation of computers and other equipment for so-called secondary border crossings. European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) Head of Mission to Serbia Daniel Julgaris stressed that the agency’s cooperation with the Border Police had been ongoing for six years, and that, in that time, donations worth EUR 41.5mn had been made. Julgaris said that cooperation with the Border Police was very successful, and expressed his expectation that border crossings between Serbia and its neighbors, in whose reconstruction the EAR has been active, would soon be removed. Head of the European Commission’s Political Section in Serbia Esmeralda Hernandez Aragones said that effective border control was vital for Serbia’s efforts to join the EU. Aragones said that the EC’s aim in extending this aid was to create a border system that would allow the free movement of people and goods, and, at the same time, reduce illegal cross-border activities. She also highlighted the significance of improving regional cooperation in the area of frontier control. The new jeeps (Beta)
