Six days ahead of the run-off, Boris Tadic (DS) still does not know if he can count on support from his coalition partners. This transpired last night as Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's DSS party spokesman Andreja Mladenovic took part in a B92 TV talk show. Kostunica still mulls endorsement He denied that his party implicitly backed Tadic's rival, Tomislav Nikolic (SRS), and could not confirm whether the prime minister will call on his supporters to vote for the incumbent come Sunday. The DS, DSS-NS, and G17 Plus form the country's ruling coalition and government. Mladjan Dinkic's G17 Plus has actively assisted Tadic's campaign. The start of the new week has not made matters any clearer when it come to the DSS endorsement decision. Mladenovic held a news conference in Belgrade this Monday only to say that the DSS main board will make a decision to support a candidate in the presidential run-off "only if there is need for this." He clarified that this depended on the Democrats' answer to his party's demand that an annex be added to the coalition agreement, hammered last spring, which kept Kostunica in the prime minister's chair despite the fact his party came in third in the general election last January. The annex, which the DS already rejected as "blackmail", regards Serbia's EU integration. Kostunica's party wants the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), should it be signed, to be annulled in case the EU also decides to send its disputed mission to Kosovo. But Mladenovic today said he did not expect that the ongoing coalition crisis over the presidential ballot will reflect on the cabinet and its stability. Asked why his party decided to come up with the annex precisely between the two rounds of the election, Mladenovic said, "we cannot wait for Kosovo's independence to be recognized – now is the right time for this." The DSS spokesman added that a transit agreement Serbia has with NATO could also be reexamined if the EU decides to go ahead with its Kosovo plans. Andreja Mladenovic (FoNet)
