Albania's president says Kosovo institutions face a historic task – declaring the independence of Europe’s newest state. “Declaring the independence of Kosovo, as Europe’s newest sovereign and democratic state where minority rights will be respected, is the duty of the new Kosovo institutions,” said Bamir Topi, after a meeting with Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci in Pristina today. "Kosovo institutions face historic task" The Albanian president said that the day was very near, but that neither Topi nor Thaci would say if an exact date for the independence declaration had been set. “We’ll announce the date very soon. In the meantime, we’ll finalize a few more procedural and technical matters,” said Thaci, who returned yesterday from Brussels, where he had met with EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana and Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn. The Kosovo prime minister said that he expected “the EU to be united in recognizing Kosovo’s independence.” Meanwhile, he and Topi committed to intensifying cooperation between Kosovo and Albania. “Cooperation between Kosovo and Albania is excellent and will intensify after independence,” said Thaci.
