The Election Commission, RIK, has made no decision regarding alleged breaches of the election silence rule. The session of the commission ended last night with 13 out of 14 members voting in favor of undertaking no action to punish the media that reportedly broke the rule not to report on campaigns or in any other way influence the voters two day ahead of the ballot. Election commission undecided on complaints The Serb Radical Party (SRS) and the Liberal-Democrats (LDP) members of the body set up to organize and supervise the vote lodged the complaints. After the meeting last night, which lasted for five hours, the complaints have apparently neither been accepted nor rejected. But the commission did make another decision, namely to order campaign billboards within a 50-meter radius of the polling stations covered. This will be a job for local governance offices. Meantime, RIK chairwoman Sonja Brkic has announced that British Ambassador to Serbia Stephen Wordsworth had sent a letter to the commission, requesting a clarification of the situation concerning the controversial banning of embassy observers who wished to monitor the election. Although Serbia's Supreme Court had ordered RIK to allow U.S. and UK monitors to take part in the process, the commission did not obey. The Radicals represented in the commission moved for Brkic to relay the letter to the commission "at the next session," which the chairwoman accepted. But the Radicals were also critical of Brkic, citing concern over some of her media statements, and calling on her to "either respect the decisions made in majority votes or resign." Some RIK members also said they were unhappy about the way the media reported about their activities. The polls will open in the Serbian presidential election at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.
